Karma Kutir believes that to live with dignity is a basic human right. Any
effort at rehabilitation must have that element in its essence. Starting with
this outlook, self-support programmes were formulated for underprivileged women
and girls. The strategy was two fold : to provide training in economically
viable skills, and in that process, to revive the traditional handicrafts of
Bengal. Special emphasis was given to kantha, layered cotton coverlets
with typical stitch and embroidery, an exquisite home-craft then under threat
of dying out. The All India Handicrafts Board already had in hand a master plan
for the revival of Indian handicrafts.

With complete faith in Dr. Phulrenu Guha’s integrity and capability, Smt.
Kamala Devi Chattopadhyay, the then Chairperson of the All India Handicrafts
Board, entrusted her with the responsibility of planning and running one of
four regional institutions. Karma Kutir then started the Regional Handicrafts
Training Institute covering Eastern and North Eastern States. The Institute’s
performance – the quality of its training and production – brought not only
trainees from these states but also exchange students from Nigeria, Sri Lanka
and Mauritius. As the handicrafts movement gathered momentum in other states,
each formed its own infrastructure. As over the years regional handicrafts
institutions developed in the different states of the North-East, from 1976
onwards West Bengal became Karma Kutir’s sole responsibility.
