| Dr. Phulrenu Guha, eminent social activist,
legislator and philanthropist, together with a group of prominent women social
workers of Kolkata, founded Karma Kutir in 1961. It became a registered
voluntary social welfare organization in the following year.

|
| Initially the aim was to address a very specific
problem of the time. Since 1947, West Bengal, especially Kolkata and the
neighbouring districts had been flooded intermittently with waves of refugees
from erstwhile East Pakistan. The crucial need was to rehabilitate those
displaced persons, the economically marginalized women and children in
particular. Karma Kutir took up the challenge with enormous zeal and sincerity.
