Background of the Project :
Karma Kutir runs a crèche for children of
the marginalized women. Mothers of the children mostly work as domestic maids.
They drop their children at crèche before leaving for work and pick them up
while going home at noontime. This project runs from two different locations - one at Karma Kutir’s own premise at 119,
Bosepukur Road, Kasba, Kolkata – 700 039 . Another creche, which use to be at
Panchanantalla, has shifted to the P-8, Gariahat Road, Kolkata - 700029, premise of Karma Kutir from 15th June, 2005.
This project is funded by West Bengal Social Welfare Advisory Board, Govt. of West Bengal.

Objective for upgradation :
Children , no matter which strata of society they are coming from, get
traumatized at the time of their first entry into the school system. In course
of time, most of the children get used and incorporate the discipline of school
life in their own system.
However, the follow-up studies show that the children from the
socio-economically marginalized families find the process difficult. The
failure on their part may largely be contributed to the lack of support system
in their families. This is probably one of the reasons for the high rate of
dropouts among those children.

For effectively bridging the gap between the naivety of the child’s initial
world and the external world of school discipline, Karma Kutir proposes to
introduce preparatory exercises in the crèche. Hopefully the attempt will help
in reducing the rate of school dropouts among the marginalized children. The
proposed project is expected to prepare the children for the exposure so that
they can effectively become part of the mainstream. The motivation level of
their families is expected to get a boost from it. The lack of support system
in the marginalized families i.e. the absence of educationally congenial social
atmosphere may be constructed through such programme. Crèches definitely have
the potential to play a decisive role in helping those children come out of the
quagmire.
