| Karma Kutir works for empowerment of
marginalized women through skill and confidence building and self employment
and income generation opportunities
|
|
Dr. Phulrenu Guha, a social activist,
philanthropist and legislator, joined by a group of active social workers,
founded Karma Kutir in 1961 and in the following year Karma Kutir became a
registered voluntary social welfare organization. As the name suggests,
it's a secure 'kutir' (house) for underprivileged women to get training in
finding 'karma' (employment) and become independent. |
Since its inception, in 1961, this voluntary social
welfare organization has taken up various projects for empowerment of
marginalized women through skill building for self-employment and income
generation opportunities. Karma Kutir works with the objective of a holistic
development of the trainees and the projects include awareness programmes,
confidence building, leadership training as well as designing, costing and
marketing training and training in entrepreneurship.
In the past Karma Kutir's handicraft training focus has been on skills training
only.
However, experience has shown that many women who go through the programme,
though well trained in the craft, often end up working as skilled labor for
exploitative middlemen who pay low wages for such a specialized craft. At this
stage the women lack the skill to be involved in tasks that require greater
responsibility like designing, merchandising and marketing of their products. The
aim is to train women in running their own business, providing them with skills
in marketing, merchandising, running of production units (where the items are
designed, produced, prices are set and marketing of the items take place) and
thereby overcoming exploitation by middle men. Programmes include
Hand Embroidery with specialization in Kantha work, Tie and Dye, Cutting and
Tailoring, Batik and Screen Printing etc., production, marketing,
self-employment and formation of groups, etc.

Present training programmes encompass
skills in designing, costing, marketing, merchandising and entrepreneurship
development. To build self-confidence, trainees are encouraged to develop
skills in public speaking and presentation, to participate in trade
expositions, etc. To enhance their quality of life and widen their outlook,
cultural activities and excursions are undertaken. Our ultimate aim is to
encourage formation of self-help groups and confident self-employed artisans.
