Legal Awareness Camps
The persisting, if not increasing, crime and violence against women reflect a wide gap between legislation and its implementation, between mandate and reality, especially in the lives of the women belonging to the rural sectors. The problem urge for a pragmatic and coordinated approach, and is particularly needed at the grass root level.
While conducting a Self Employment Training Programme in embroidery, Karma Kutir had the opportunity to come close to the rural women and to hold interactive sessions with them to know about their needs. Victimization through dowry demand, sexual violence, eve teasing and rape, property rights and marriage laws are some of the fields on which the women
expressed their interest to know about the provisions in laws for protection of their rights. Consequently, Karma Kutir arranged for legal literacy camps in two phases at village Uttar Kajirhat in South 24 Parganas. The aim was to :
  1. Impart educative knowledge regarding fundamental rights as laid down in the Constitution of India.
  2. Impart knowledge regarding their rights as well as their duties as a citizen.
  3. Help women get acquainted with relevant laws and the legal procedures.
  4. Motivate to fight victimization by taking recourse to the existing legal aid facilities, where and how legal aid can be availed when necessary.
  5. Provide legal aid counseling.
The responses to the programmes were very encouraging. Since then the women of the nearby villages are approaching Karma Kutir for holding such camps and also for legal aid facilities in respective villages.

Previous Activities
Since 1964 Karma Kutir had been running welfare centres in various rural areas at various times. They provided outdoor maternity services and held adult education classes. Maternity services included prenatal care, delivery and follow-up postnatal care. Ailing mothers were given special diets and free medication.

In 1973 the West Bengal Government requested Karma Kutir to implement a scheme to train unemployed educated women. Karma Kutir opened a centre at Babu Bagan to train young women in traditional handicrafts, to prepare them to earn their keep by selling what they made.
