Karma Kutir played an important role to revive the craftsmanship of Indian kantha while empowering the underprivileged women

Indian kantha is undoubtedly a fine example of rich tradition of handicrafts in rural Bengal. A product that was once made for necessity is now an emissary of Indian handicraft throughout the world. Kantha are traditionally associated with rural women of Bengal who transformed pieces of old rags into magical textiles. The kantha stitch, in fact, is merely a running stitch. It is the clever grading of the stitches, and the positioning, that produces the amazing variety of designs.
Under the guidance of Dr. Phulrenu Guha Karma Kutir has successfully raised the traditional craft of Kantha, to an art form, and made it a commercially viable product for its admirers all over the world.

Karma Kutir had adopted this traditional art form for two different reasons. The primary reason was of course to make the underprivileged women of the rural and urban India, self-employed and independent. The secondary aim was to revive the almost extinct handicrafts of India and kantha was on the top of the priority list.

Since its inception, Karma Kutir has organized innumerable training camps and taken up projects to train the underprivileged women in the craft. Along with training them in making and stitching kantha, Karma Kutir also made arrangement to market these products. Through their showroom in Kolkata and annual exhibitions, Karma Kutir is relentlessly working to promote this ancient rural art form. Karma Kutir also has an agreement with Ganapati Parks Ltd., who run a showroom at City Centre Mall, Salt Lake, Kolkata, by the name of Aakriti. Some of Karma Kutir Beneficiary products are being displayed at Aakriti. Some items are also displayed at the Bengal Home Industries Association, for sale. With all these ventures Karma Kutir is showing those underprivileged women the way to live with self reliance as well as collecting funds for their future projects.
